The Shack

May 2017 - August 2021

Collaboration with Dan Edelstein

I built this shack by hand with the help of my partner Dan Edelstein, in a friend's backyard in Queens, New York City, and I lived inside of it from it's completion in June 2018 until I moved out of the USA in August 2021.

Upon returning to New York City after getting my BFA in Baltimore, I found it nearly impossible to find an affordable place to live. The shack took just over a year to complete and was the most strenuous and dedicated project I've ever done. It was insulated, wired with electricity, completely weatherproof, and suitable for comfortable year-round living. I built it in part because I was curious about the experience of building something on my own that I could live inside of, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience in many ways. It was an airy, earthy creative refuge tucked away in a concrete metropolis, until the house whose property it shared was sold.

The fate of the shack is technically unknown but we believe it was demolished by the new owners some time in 2022. RIP
